"Millinery" is a word that refers to women's hats. During a time when women were required by the fashions and traditions of the day to wear hats whenever they were in public, many hat designs and decorations were created. The decorations included faux flowers made of fabric or even paper. Today vintage millinery flowers are used not only on hats, but also for hair clips, belts and other clothing. You can make your own millinery flowers in the old-fashioned way with a little fabric and a few other sewing or craft supplies.
Instructions

Cut smooth, shiny fabric into 3-inch squares, making sure the sides of each square are following the grain of the fabric, not on a diagonal. Each square will become a petal of the flower. Cut as many squares as you want petals on your flower.
2Place one square on a table and place a large needle on the upper left corner. Pick up the corner and roll it tightly around the needle. You can slip the needle out at any time, after you are sure you have a good grip and the fabric will not unroll. Roll the square halfway so you end up with a triangle shape, with the roll as its longest side.
3Hold one end of the roll with one hand. Use the other hand to gather the opposite edges of the fabric square into small pleats until you reach the other end of the roll. Now the rolled fabric will form an oval-shaped petal and the rest of the fabric will form small pleats.
4Wrap several rounds of thread tightly around the bottom of the petal. Make sure you wrap both ends of the fabric roll and wrap enough thread so the petal maintains its shape if you let go. There will be some excess fabric below the thread.
5Snip off the excess fabric, squaring off the petal at the bottom a little below the thread. Do not cut the thread. Repeat the rolling, wrapping and snipping procedure for every square of fabric you cut in Step 1.
6Cut a circle of scrap fabric for the base of the flower. The size of this circle dictates the size of the flower. A good starting place is 2 or 3 inches in diameter.
7Glue a row of petals around the outer edge of the scrap fabric circle. Make sure they are in a perfect circle and radiate from the center point. This will ensure you have a natural-looking flower at the end. Glue another row of petals inside the first row, staggering their position between the petals of the first row and hiding the thread ends of the first row. Continue gluing rows of petals until you reach the center of the circle.
8Glue or sew a button or large bead in the middle to complete the flower. Now it is ready to secure to a hat, a hair clip, a belt, or any other item of clothing or personal accessory.
