Types of Obi

An obi is a special type of belt or sash worn by both men and women with traditional Japanese clothing. However, women's obi are typically much more elaborate than those worn by men and are tied in a wide variety of styles. Because obi have been worn for centuries, there are many types. Four types often used in modern times are the maru obi, fukuro obi, nagoya obi and hanhaba obi.

Maru Obi

A maru obi is 26 inches wide and about 157 inches long. Maru obi are very expensive and are used for formal occasions only. Maru obi are made of tapestry or brocade and have elaborate patterns along their entire length and on both sides, often embellished with gold thread. These obi are folded, heavy and bulky, making them rather uncomfortable to wear. Typically, these obi are only worn by geisha, maiko and brides.

Fukuro Obi

A fukuro obi is 11.8 inches wide and about 157 inches long. This obi is used for formal or semiformal occasions and is nearly indistinguishable from a maru obi when worn and tied. It is less bulky than a maru obi and is thus more commonly used for formal occasions than a maru obi. This obi is made from two pieces of fabric sewn together or a single piece of fabric folded in half. There are three general types: obi made entirely from brocade, obi with a brocade front lined with a less expensive fabric and an obi patterned only where the patterns would normally be visible when worn.

Nagoya Obi

Nagoya obi are 13.4 inches wide and 141.7 inches long. These obi are used for semiformal or casual occasions and are the most commonly used type of obi. These obi are much easier to wear than maru or fukuro obi, and they are made with part of the obi folded and stitched in place. The narrow, folded part is wrapped around the waist, and the wider, unfolded part is tied into a bow. These obi were originally designed for convenience and do not have the formality associated with maru or fukuro obi, but they can be very elaborate and beautiful and are thus very common.

Hanhaba Obi

Hanhaba obi are between 5.5 and 6 inches wide and 142 inches long. The word "han" means half, referring to the fact that these obi have half the width of other types of obi. Hanhaba obi are used for everyday wear and casual occasions, and they are typically not decorated with embroidery or brocade like other obi. Hanhaba obi are worn under a haori or kimono coat, with a yukata or with children's kimono. Hanhaba obi for children are typically brightly colored, and hanhaba obi may have stenciled designs.
