African women wear a long scarf of beautiful cotton fabric wrapped around their heads. This fabric wrap is called a gele. Geles are about 5 feet long and 2 feet wide. Modern women, both in Europe and the U.S., often have their dressmaker make a dress and gele from the the same fabric to create a stunningly elegant outfit for special occasions. There are several ways to wrap a gele to achieve different looks.
Instructions
Straight Fold Wrap
- 1
Fold the gele into a strip about 6 inches wide, by folding in in half lengthwise twice. Grasp the fabric so that your right hand is holding the fabric about 30 inches from one end and your left hand is holding the fabric about 18 inches from the other end.
2Place the fabric behind your head with a folded edge at the nape of your neck. Bring both ends to the front of your head. Wrap the shorter end of the fabric around your forehead above the longer end.
3Fold the longer side of the fabric 6 inches from the center of your forehead. Stick this fold under the short end of the fabric that is wrapped around your head. With your other hand, reach in and pull the fold of fabric out the top of the head wrap, making a loop like the loop of a bow. Pull the loop until the wrap is comfortably tight.
4Move the wrap on your head until you are pleased with the look. This will get any hanging tails of fabric out of your face. Spread the loop and the tails to fluff them up and make them more attractive.
Diagonal Fold Wrap
- 5
Fold the fabric diagonaly. Grasp the fabric by the two folded corners. Place the center of the folded edge at the nape of your neck.
6Wrap one end of the fabric around the top of your head. Wrap the other end around below it just above your eyes. Tie the folded corners together in a double knot at the back of your head.
7Push the wrap back on your head until it is comfortable. Fold the loose corners back one at a time. Do not fold them completely back in a hard fold; fold just the edges back to create a large, full wrap. Adjust these edges until you get the look you want.
