How to Wear a Kanzashi

A Kanzashi is a hair ornament that is often worn with a Kimono or Yukata by women in Japan. They are usually made from pieces of cloth that are folded into flowers and then attached to a pin. Kanzashis were first used in Japan during the Jomon period or 14,000 BCE to 300 BCE, according to the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. They were thought to ward off evil spirits. Today, Kanzashis are used to accessorize hairstyles. Learn how to wear these beautiful pins in your hair.

Instructions

    1

Pull your hair straight back behind your head and twist it into a tight coil.

    2

Hold the base of the twist and coil the hair around itself to create a tight bun.

    3

Don't allow the bun to get taller. You want it to be wide, so coil it around the head so it is a flat twisted bun.

    4

Use one hand to hold the bun flat to the head and use the other hand to secure it to the scalp with bobbly pins. Push a bobby pin through the outside of the bun and through the scalp. Do this all the way around the bun until it is secure.

    5

Pin the end of the twist to the scalp and tuck any falling hairs into the bun.

    6

Open the Kanzashi and insert it through the top of the bun, or through the side. Make sure it is secure. Use hairspray to hold the bun in place.
