Instructions to Make a Beaded Coif Headdress

You can make a beaded coif headdress on a fabric-covered comb, barrette or headband. Beading is easy to learn and produces beautiful results with artificial or real pearls, glass or resin beads, crystals and even gemstones. Whether you are beading a wedding headdress with an attached bridal veil, a clip to match an evening gown or a costume headpiece, you can craft matching coif headdresses or build a one-of-a-kind creation.

Where to Buy Beads

You can find beads at craft stores and discount stores with craft sections, stand-alone bead stores or online. Discover vintage beads at thrift stores, estate auctions and garage sales. To create a more authentic look on a budget, use artificial pearls from the craft stores and intersperse real pearls or other beads from estate or garage sales.

Other Materials for Beading

You will need a couple of packs of beading needles, which are very thin so they fit through the miniscule bead holes. Beading needles are almost impossible to thread without a needle threader, but each pack of beading needles usually includes a threader. You will also need some seed beads for anchoring your beads to the fabric. Buy beading thread and a bead box with compartments for keeping your beads separated and organized.

Beading the Headdress

Make a small knot at the end of a double-threaded beading needle. Poke the needle through the fabric and pull the thread through until the knot is at the end and the thread is taut. Then hold your needle vertically and drop a bead onto the needle until the bead hits the fabric. Put the needle through the seed bead and lower the seed bead until it is on top of the larger bead. Pull your thread over the seed bead and back into the larger bead and fabric. Run the needle under the fabric a few millimeters and out again. Drop another bead and seed bead onto the needle and continue with this process until the thread begins to get short.

Tying Off

When your thread is approximately three inches long, put it through the fabric and out again. Pull the thread taut and repeat this process three times. Then cut the thread flush with the fabric, thread the needle again, tie the thread in a knot at the end and continue beading. Most beaders have at least five needles threaded and stuck in a pin cushion for easy access. This saves time because you don't have to stop and thread the needle every time the thread gets short.

Aurora Borealis Beads

You can put a small metallic hologram sequin through your needle first, and then add an Aurora Borealis (AB) crystal bead to your creation. Or you can add just the AB to your creation without the sequin under it. Add ABs sparingly because just a few of them in a headpiece beaded with pearls or glass beads will make the whole headpiece stand out subtly. In twilight, the ABs produce a twinkling effect.
