Snap fasteners are used in lieu of buttons or zippers as a closure on clothes or accessories. There are two types of snaps -- post and prong. While both work in a similar fashion, the snaps are installed differently and are better suited to different items. Post snaps are best suited to thick fabrics, such as leather coats, purses and denim. Prong snaps are best suited to woven materials, such as fleece, cotton and other lightweight fabrics. You can use snaps by lining up one side, which typically has a raised area in the center, with the opposite side, which will fit into and around the raised area of the snap. Then you press the two together. The two sides of the snap clip into each other as a closure.

Installing

Mark with a fabric marker the points in the fabric you want to attach a snap to. Once you have settled on the positioning, cut small holes with scissors or punch holes with a fabric hole punch for use with post snaps. If you are using prong snaps, you can bypass the hole punching.
2Insert the post snap through the hole in the fabric. If using prong snaps, insert through the marked points in the fabric.
3Clip the stud onto the prongs of the pronged snap on one side of the closure and clip the socket onto the pronged snap on the other side.
4Clip the stud onto the top of the post snap on one side of the closure and the capped post to the post snap on the other side.
5Hit each snap gently with a hammer to seal the pieces together fully.
