Scarves are an incredibly versatile accessory. Knit and pashmina scarves keep away the cold in the winter, while silk scarves add color and flair to ensembles year round. Using a long rectangular scarf, you can not only keep warm, but also create several belts, bow ties, head wraps and personalize accessories like purses and hats.

Using Scarves as Belts

To create a belt to define your waist with a little flair, wrap a long rectangular scarf around your waist, crossing ends at your back and bringing them back to the front. Tie these ends into a bow, tucking the ends back into the bow. This creates a flower. For a simpler waist belt, rather than tying the ends into a bow, weave the ends into the belt.

Using Scarves as Bow Ties

A scarf can also create an interesting, feminine bow tie. Lay the scarf across your neck and tie it into a knot. Tie a bow in the same manner you would tie your shoes. For a more buttoned up look, keep the bow tie right at the neck. For something more casual, tie the bow a few inches below the neck.

Using Scarves as Head Wraps

A scarf can be amazing for covering up bad hair days. For a simple head wrap, wrap the scarf over your head and tie it in a knot at the nape of your neck, letting the ends hang loosely. To create your own small hat, wrap the scarf over your head, crossing the ends at the nape of your neck and wrapping them back towards the crown. Tie the ends into a bow or knot for a chic turban look. A thicker scarf can also double as a hood. Simply drape the scarf over your head and then either wrap it around the neck or tie the ends into a knot.

Using Scarves as Tops

A thicker scarf can also be used as a halter top. Laying the scarf around your neck, shorten one end and tie a knot. Spreading out the longer end, wrap it all the way around your torso and tuck the ends in.

Using Scarves as Accessories

A scarf can be knotted or tied in a bow around a purse strap or a hat to add some personality and flair. You can also create a shrug by laying the scarf around your neck and tying the ends of the scarf together behind your back to create a circle. Slide the scarf to cover your shoulders.
