How to Select the Perfect Purse

If you want your handbag to be more than a repository for old receipts, dried-up pens and lint, take time to find the perfect purse. Functionallity should be at the top of the list, but style can follow as a close second. Determine your habits, your budget and even your body type when shopping to find the purse that will fit you and your lifestyle best.

Determine when and why you will use your purse. If you're looking for an everyday purse suitable for work, stick with neutral colors and leather, a timeless, classic material. If you lead a sportier lifestyle, choose durable canvas or vinyl.

Choose a size that fits your body type. If you're petite, go for smaller handbags that won't overwhelm your small frame. If you're tall or plus-size, pick a bigger bag that's proportional to your size. In either case, make sure you don't overfill it.

Pick a purse that has the compartments you need to stay organized. Pick a purse with compartments for your cell phone and keys, two items you use often. A tote may have space for wallets, notebooks and other items, while hobos will allow other items to move freely inside.

Set a budget for your purse. If you plan on using your purse every day for years, invest in a high-quality bag that may cost more. If this purse is a fun addition to basic bags you already have, spend a bit less.

Check that shoulder straps, handles and zippers are convenient and comfortable. When shopping, put the items in your old one into the potential new one to make sure everything fits and that the purse sits comfortably on your shoulder or feels good in your hand.
