Cleaning your silverware with silver polish will make your silver shine like it is brand new. This may seem harmless, but if you are pregnant you will want to avoid silver polish for its toxic effects.
Ingredients
Silver polish contains thiourea, which is known to cause cancer in animals and possibly humans. Silver polish also contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which cause headaches, vomiting, nausea and dizziness.
Studies
Studies show that abuse of toluene, a solvent found in silver polish, through sniffing it can cause fertility and developmental disorders. Extreme or repeated exposure to toluene can cause nervous system, urinary tract and gastrointestinal issues in unborn babies, and also an increased risk of miscarriage.
Household Cleaners
In 2000, the United States Poison Control Centers received reports that household cleaners such as silver polish accounted for 10 percent of all toxic exposures in the United States.
Animals
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry states that silver polish also affects pregnant animals the same way it affects pregnant humans.
Alternatives
Toothpaste works just as well as silver polish for cleaning silverware.
