Church hats are women's dress hats, often accented with ribbons, flowers or netting. While such hats used to be worn for everyday wear, shopping, luncheons and other occasions, today they are most commonly only worn for Sunday church service. In some communities, church hats are worn by nearly every woman, whereas in others they are quite uncommon. In any case, a well-chosen and coordinated hat is the perfect accent for a dress or suit, adding personality and style to your church outfit.
Origins
The Apostle Paul decreed that women should cover their heads during worship (1 Corinthians 11:15). This custom applied both throughout history and through a good portion of the 20th century. While scarves, hats and veils were all worn by women throughout the years in church, the colorful and lively dress of African American women in the early 20th century gave way to the tradition of church hats today.
History
When women wore hats regularly, church hats were often no more elaborate than any other dress hat. Faced with a dreary daily wardrobe and life of hard labor, bright colors and elaborate hats made Sunday a day of both worship and celebration. Today, however, hats are not common, except in church. African American women have made the church hat an art form in and of itself, beautifully constructed and decorated.
Occasions
While church hats or crowns may be worn every Sunday, the biggest and most important days are Easter and Mother's Day. These days merit a new hat for many women. Church hats are also a status symbol, with new hats and a substantial collection of hats a sign of material success.
Rules
There are certain fashion rules associated with church hats. A church hat should never be wider than your shoulders or darker than your shoes. Sequins are only worn at night and feathers or ribbons should not be bent, broken or damaged. Easter church hats should be white, cream or a pastel shade. A chapel length veil on a hat is always a good choice.
Materials and Styles
Winter church hats are most typically made out of felt and often have a minimal brim. Feathers, ribbons and veils are used to add character and individuality to winter hats. Summer hats are typically constructed of reinforced fabric, straw or sisal. Wide brims are more common in summer hats. Bright and exuberant colors and flowers are common for warmer weather. Styles vary and should always be chosen to flatter your face and church attire.
