The only thing better than buying handmade jewelry is making it yourself. Because no one knows your taste better than you do, only you can make yourself the perfect necklace. Aside from that, making your own is easy and a lot of fun. Crystal and tube necklaces are charming and pretty and can be made for a fraction of the price it costs to buy them.
Color Scheme
Choosing a color scheme or not makes all the difference in whether the finished product looks like a child's school project or a professionally made piece of jewelry. That doesn't mean that making a colorful necklace is out. Any color combination can be used as long as it is combined artfully. The best way to achieve this is to use a pattern rather than a random combination of colors. For example, two red tubes, blue crystal, green crystal, two more red tubes.
Design
The types of necklaces that can be made with crystals and tubes might sound very limited but in reality the possibilities are nearly endless. The biggest decision that has to be made is what length to make the necklace. Short necklaces, like chokers, tend to look dressier and emphasize the neck. Very long necklaces accessorize clothing well. There are also several different bead sizes to choose from, depending on personal taste and necklace length.
Materials
The selection of jewelry making materials and retailers who sell them is vast. Nylon coated stainless steel wire is both durable and soft and is commonly sold by the spool in varying lengths. Tubes and crystal beads are generally bought in bags. They are either sold as a quantity of identical beads, or in a mix of colors that complement each other. The mix bags work well for achieving a certain look, such as earthy colors or vintage. Clasps also come in a variety of styles including magnetic, toggle or the more common trigger style.
Other ideas
Retailers have begun to sell fun pieces to add even more individuality to jewelry making, like pendants or chunky stones. Since much of the materials are sold in a larger quantity than what is needed for one necklace, a nice idea is to make matching accessories, such as a bracelet or toe ring. Another idea, if the beads are small or the necklace is long, is to make more than one necklace that compliment each other.
