How to Take Care of Coral Jewelry

A prized material for jewelry-making, coral requires special care due to its composition and other characteristics. Composed of calcium carbonate, it does not react well to contact with chemicals or acids. In addition, it is softer than many other types of jewelry with a rating of between 3 and 4 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.

Instructions

Apply hairspray and perfume before putting on your coral jewelry. Coral stones may sustain damage if exposed to chemicals.

Wipe your coral pieces with a clean, damp, soft cloth, and allow them to air dry before storing.

Store coral in individual bags or a lined box away from your other pieces of jewelry to avoid scratching.

Inspect your jewelry for loose stones and take your item to a jeweler for repairs as needed.
