Leg warmers are knit leg coverings originally designed to provide an easily removable cover for dancers' bare legs; however, they can also be worn as a fashion accessory. Since they are essentially tall, footless socks, you may not know how to even begin incorporating leg warmers into an outfit or even how to physically wear them without feeling silly or awkward. Luckily, leg warmers are versatile and easy to experiment with.
Functional Method
Leg warmers generally come in one size only and are meant to be slouchy, so don't worry about getting a sleek, customized fit. Wear leg warmers over tights, leggings or bare legs to balance out the thicker texture from leg warmers. Slide your foot through the leg warmer until the bottom of the warmer rests level with your ankle. Pull the leg warmer up to just below your knee, so that your knee is still visible. Unless you are a dancer wearing a leotard, do not pull the leg warmers above your knees. Obscuring your knees with the added bulkiness of leg warmers, especially thicker crocheted versions, will visually cut off the length of your legs to make you look shorter, and will add extra width to the widest part of your legs.
Put on your shoes after your adjust the leg warmers. If you're wearing winter boots, tuck the leg warmers inside them. For all other shoe types, simply adjust the bottoms of your leg warmers so they rest above the backs of your heels. Don't pull your leg warmers too close to your heels or you risk accidentally stepping on them while walking. If they are too long and won't stay slouched, make a small cuff at the bottom of each.
Accessorizing with Leg Warmers
To use leg warmers as a fashion accessory instead of a functional purpose, layer them over sleek bottoms for the most flattering look. Leg warmers tend to create a more casual look, so stick to pairing them with knits or denim. Add coordinating leg warmers to a basic denim skirt and ballet flats. If you're not using leg warmers for functional reasons, you can adjust them so they either stop at or just below your calves. Make sure flat shoes are completely uncovered by the leg warmers. Although leg warmers work best with skirts or leggings and flat shoes, you can add them to slim-fitting jeans and heels for a trendy look. Choose body-hugging jeans that fit snugly across the lower legs and ankles. Flared or boot-cut styles will be too bulky to accomodate additional layers. You can position leg warmers so they cover the tops of high-heeled shoes rather than resting at your ankles--just make sure they aren't pulled low enough to be snagged.
