How to Repair Plastic Sunglasses

If your plastic sunglasses are scratched, loose or broken, consider repairing them instead of purchasing a new pair. Chances are your sunglasses will look and perform like new, and you'll save money. Sunglasses warranties cover only manufacturer defects, not everyday wear and tear, or mishandling.

Instructions

Buy an eyeglass repair kit that contains tools and parts specifically designed for eyeglasses. These kits are available at drugstores and other stores that sell eyeglasses. Your kit will include replacement screws, a small screwdriver, tweezers and replacement nose pads. The kits cost as little as $1.99 in November 2010.

Tighten loose screws and replace missing screws in your sunglasses. Use the small screwdriver from your repair kit to tighten screws that adhere the bows to frames. If you are missing screws, use the standard size screws provided in your tool kit. Tighten one side until you feel slight resistance from the screw. Then do the same on the other side. Try on the glasses to determine fit. If your sunglasses are not tight enough, repeat the process, being careful not to over-tighten the screws.

Tighten or repair spring hinges using your repair kit screwdriver and a paperclip. Place the tip of the paperclip on the bottom edge of the spring and maintain pressure on the spring as you tighten the screw of your spring hinge. This way the spring will remain taut as you tighten.

If your spring is bent or broken, your repair kit may contain a replacement spring, or you may have to purchase a replacement spring. Check with a local optical shop or look online for replacement springs.

Place the replacement spring inside the hinge. Use the paperclip to align the spring and to maintain tension on the spring as you tighten the screw of the hinge.

Replace the nose pads. Use the small screwdriver and nose pads included in your repair kit to replace your broken or worn out nose pads. Remove the old nose pads by turning the nose bracket screws counterclockwise . Remove the nose pads. Then replace the nose pads with those from your repair kit. Tighten the screws of the nose brackets by turning them clockwise.

Fix cracked frames with a quick-bond adhesive. Gently sand broken edges. Apply the quick bond adhesive to the edges and quickly align them. Clean any excess or drips with a cotton swab saturated with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. Let your sunglasses sit for at least two hours before using them.

Use toothpaste or metal polish to repair scratches caused by everyday use. Spread toothpaste on the clean lens being careful to cover all scratches. Let the toothpaste dry. Then clean the lens with a mild soap and water, and dry with a soft cloth.

If toothpaste is not effective, try the same process as above substituting metal polish, such as Brasso.
