Coach has been manufacturing must-have quality accessories since 1941. Coach is especially known for its leather goods, including luggage and handbags, but also sells wallets, shoes, apparel, jewelry and other luxury gift items. The Coach handbag model 13762 Optic Signature Eastwest Gallery Tote was first manufactured in 2008, but has since been discontinued. You can still find these bags for sale on the Internet, but as is the case with name-brand purses, you need to be careful or you could purchase a fake.

Look online for the style. Search for "Coach 13762 Optic Signature Eastwest Gallery Tote" to see exactly what the purse looks like and its specifications. This information is no longer available through the manufacturer, except for a photo.
2Check the quality of the handbag. Coach stitching is even throughout and there is no gluing together of pieces. Only the highest quality leather or suede trim is used, not plastic or pleather. Coach includes a care card inside a zippered pocket of each handbag. The card tells what the bag is made of and provides cleaning specific instructions.
3Smell the bag if you are buying it in person. Assure yourself it smells like leather. Some counterfeiters will spray new car leather sprays on handbags to fool buyers.
4Check to see if there is a serial number. This is located on a stitch patch inside the purse and under the zipper. A serial number example is "No A08 12-13762." Preceded by a letter such as "A," "08" is the year of manufacture and the last number "12-13762" is the registration number for the style of bag.
5Compare the 13762 Optic Signature you see online with the style's specifications. The purse was made in muted blue, khaki, pale brown, dark brown and black, out of sateen fabric with leather trim and silver hardware, including four silver feet on the bottom. It was 14 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches tall by 4 1/4 inches deep. Its strap adjusts from 19 to 22 inches long.
The Coach Signature optic design (paired C logos) has a Coach logo stamped onto the front of the bag plus a metallic hanging Coach tag. If your logo or label is glued on, it is a phony bag. Other features of the 13762 Optic Signature are a top zipper and a side zipper pocket, two multi-function pockets, a key fob and fabric lining.
6Examine the signature "C" logos. These should line up perfectly to the center of the purse. If they don't, the bag is a fake. Coach always has two C's next to each other, lining up row after row. If the pattern is off or if the letter is another letter such as O, Q or G, the bag is counterfeit.
7Look at the bags the purses are sold in, called dust bags. These should be high-quality material in dark chocolate brown with a red drawstring. On the bottom right hand of the bag, "Coach Est. 1941" appears in white.
8Notice the logo tags, which should match the bag's trim. Coach's tags are attached by a beaded chain and the word "Coach" is not imprinted, but raised. Some Coach styles have metal tags, but never plastic ones. Counterfeiters will use the same tag for every bag style sold.
9Look at the zipper. Coach only uses high-quality YKK Zippers.
