Simple Jewelry Designs to Make

Jewelry making can be complex and complicated, but with most of the hardware available at bead and jewelry making stores, anyone can put together the pieces to create personalized accessories. Some types of jewelry don't even require specialized tools. By using simple techniques and designs, anyone can make their own jewelry.

Pendant

This piece of jewelry requires little or no construction. Choose a pendant and slip a pre-made chain through the loop. You can also use ribbon, leather or plastic string for the necklace part and add a closing clasp to the ends. You can choose any object to wear as a pendant, as long as a chain can fit through it to hold it. To make a more complicated version, choose several pendants and fix them together in a pattern using jewelry wire or jump rings tightened with jewelry pliers. Tie ribbons to each side and add a closing clasp to the ribbon.

Beaded Drop Earrings

Drop or dangle earrings are among the simplest jewelry-making designs that require construction. Choose the beads you want to use and a few separator metal beads if you want to add length. Lay out the beads in order and drop them one by one onto a head pin. Head pins come in different sizes and thicknesses to accommodate different kinds of beads. Leave enough space at the top of the head pin to make a loop with jewelry pliers. Add an earring finding to the loop and try on the earrings.

Beaded Necklace or Bracelet

Beaded jewelry is simple and easy to construct. Choose bead shapes and colors that complement each other. Lay the beads out in the order you want them to appear. Tie a knot at the end of your string or jewelry wire large enough to block the first bead from falling off. String the beads in order. Add a closing clasp to the ends of the string or wire. You can make a necklace or bracelet with this method. For more interesting designs, add metal separator beads or different size beads.

Woven Beads

At jewelry making and bead stores, you can find earrings and bracelets already assembled that have holes in them for beading. Thread a piece of jewelry wire through a hole and tie a knot on the inside so that it does not slip out. Thread a bead onto the surface of the jewelry and secure by threading the jewelry wire through another hole. You are essential weaving or sewing on beads with the jewelry wire. You can use colored jewelry wire and glass beads so that the pattern of the weave becomes part of the design.
