Type of Eye Glass Frames for Square Faces

When choosing eye glasses it is important to know what style, size and color that best suits your face. Selecting the correct frame shapes can give a face younger more youthful appearance. Certain eye glass frames will complement a square face more than others.

Many people have never considered what type of face they have. To determine your shape, simply pull the hair away from your face and look into the mirror. The square face features sharp angles, a broad jaw line and a wide forehead. If still uncertain after looking in a mirror, take a head shot with a camera. Directly onto the photograph draw an outline of the face. Next, use a ruler to measure the distance across the forehead and across the jawline. Also measure the length from the forehead to the chin. If the measurements are nearly the same (or exactly the same), then your face is square.
Because of the harsh features typified by the square face, frame it with glasses that create an elongated appearance and softens features.

Know what eye glass frame shapes are best for a square face before going to the eye glass store. Many salesmen are interested in selling the highest priced designer frames, even if they don't suit a person's face or style. If you are armed with good knowledge of appropriate frame styles, you will acquire a pair of glasses that you will still like days after the purchase.

According to Zappos.com, the square face with a "is the face shape of supermodels and Hollywood hotties [and] can be best flattered with soft curves." So someone with a square face has great company.
Select eye glass frames that are narrow and oval, small rectangles, or cat-eye shaped. These frames should not be much larger than the eyes. Highlighting the eyes with narrow frames will break up the face's composition by adding depth, which will create an illusion of elongation. Opting for small round frames will accent the eyes and draw attention away from the jawline and forehead. This will also make the square face appear less angular.
Beware that styles come and go, so don't be a slave to fashion, especially if a particular style doesn't complement your face shape. Big, round aviator glasses, for example, are not the best shape for the square face.

Thick plastic frames are not recommended for a square face. Even if the frame shape is correct, adding thick plastic will give the appearance of heaviness. So opt for small thin frames made with metal or plastic.

In order to select frame colors, choose colors that emphasize an important facial feature. For example, if you have green eyes, select a shade that is a complementary color like red. Also, consider your skin color, especially when selecting metal frames. All people have either warm or cool skin tones. Cool skin tones look great in pastel colors, silver or platinum, while warm tones look better in woodsier, earthy colors and gold.
