You may often hear about accessory counterfeiters ripping off luxury brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Prada, but they have also moved into the moderate price range arena. Fossil brand bags, which generally run between $100 to $200 retail, have also been the victim of these illegal knock-offs. The good news is that if you do find you've purchased a faux Fossil bag, you probably won't be out as much money as those scammed with luxury items, but with a little know-how you can avoid this situation entirely.

Look for the key---literally. Fossil bags have a small metal key, usually brass, gold or silver engraved with the word "Fossil." Although some faux bag manufacturers may include a key, almost none bother to have it engraved.
2Feel the exterior. Almost all Fossil bags are made of leather or a coated canvas. If the exterior feels like plastic or another synthetic material, you are probably dealing with a fake.
3Check the interior. Most Fossil bags feature multiple inside pockets to hold a cell phone, PDA, etc. If the bag you have doesn't have any interior pockets, or the lining looks like it's been glued in, chances are it's not real.
4Run the zipper to make sure it works smoothly. Bag counterfeiters cut corners in order to push out more merchandise and make a bigger profit, so details like a working zipper or making sure bag seams are even is not high on their priority list.
5Look online at the Fossil site to see if you can see anything similar in its online store. Many styles run over from season to season, only changing colors, so you may be able to recognize your bag and compare details before you buy.
