Scarf Recycling

Silkscreen scarves often feature utterly gorgeous prints. Many scarf enthusiasts splurge in second-hand shops on these wearable artworks, while others get lucky and find something stunning in a thrift shop. You can always tie a scarf around your neck, but you can use scarves in many other ways as both accessories and decorative objects.

Turn your Scarf into Art

You can recycle your scarf into artwork, especially if it is exceptionally beautiful or valuable and you fear damaging it with your makeup, drink, or food if you wear it. Instead, have it framed and hang it on a wall, just as people do those other artistic mediums of needlepoint, embroidery and lace.

Home Decorating

If you have a small scarf, you can use it as the front of a throw pillow. A large scarf can be used as the decorative centerpiece of a coverlet, bed cover, or counterpane for your bed. You may need to hire a seamstress or you may be skilled enough with a needle or sewing machine to do this work yourself. Under protective glass, a scarf can also transform a tabletop.

As Another Accessory

If you love the colors of a scarf but find the design unfortunate, tie it in a decorative bow around your purse handles or fold it into a pocket square for a blazer. If it is a rectangular scarf, use it to belt and enliven jeans, trousers or a dress that needs waist definition. If parts of the scarf are damaged, fold it so that the damaged parts are hidden, and then tie it around your head as a headband, over the crown of a hat, or around your neck as a particularly bold necklace, albeit one of fabric. You can also turn your scarf into a very lightweight handbag.

As a Headcovering

Scarves can be in many ways, some startlingly elegant, to cover the hair or just the head. Additionally, wearing a scarf, whether it is rectangular or square, as a head covering can be a wonderful way to display a spectacular print. Just make sure your hair is clean, including of styling products, and dry. If the scarf is very special, you should wear a wig cap over your hair to protect the fabric.

As Clothing

You can tie a large scarf around your hips as a sarong, around your shoulders as a shawl, or under your arms as a shrug or a bolero. You can also cut and then sew your scarf into a halter top.

As a Gift

Finally, you can also use a scarf as giftwrapping, especially if the gift is in a box the same shape as the scarf. And of course you can always give or sell the scarf itself to someone who admires it more than you do.
