How to: Victorian Makeup Bag

Flat-bottomed drawstring bags made of luxurious fabrics and drawn closed with velvety cord make for Victorian style containers for your cosmetics. Choose brocade, embroidered silk or velvet in dark tones or light creamy hues for the rich feeling that brings the Victorian era to mind. Line your bag with satin for an extra-special touch.

Instructions

Cut each fabric into a 19-inch-by-8.5-inch rectangle.

Use the compass to mark a 6-inch-diameter circle from the remainder of each fabric. Cut out both circles.

Fold the heavy rectangle vertically with right sides together. Sew along the long edge, leaving a 3-inch opening in the center for turning. Repeat with lining, without leaving an opening.

Pin each circle to the bottom of its matching tube. The tube should be inside out and the circle's right side should face the inside. Sew in place with a quarter-inch seam, then clip small triangles all around the seam to help with turning, making sure not to clip the stitches.

Turn the heavy fabric right side out and place inside the lining, still inside out, with the seams matched up. Sew around the top with a quarter-inch seam. Turn the bag right side out through the hole in the heavy fabric seam. Hand-sew the 3-inch opening closed, tucking in the seam.

Mark a line 1 inch down from the top hem. Sew around this line. Sew a second seam a quarter-inch from the top hem. These two seams make a channel for the drawstring. Use a seam ripper to pick open the side seams in the heavy fabric between these two lines so that you can feed the drawstrings through them.

Cut the velvet cord into two 18-inch lengths. Thread one end of the first length through the hole in the side seam and feed all the way around and back through the same hole. Tie the ends together. Repeat with a second length of cord, starting at the second side seam. You should have a loop of velvet cord on either side of the bag. Pull these loops to draw the bag closed.
