The right pair of sunglasses may seem difficult to find, but there are many types of eye shades available -- across a vast spectrum of price ranges -- for use in numerous applications. While honing-in on just the right pair may seem daunting; if you carefully consider your needs and expectations from this pair of sunglasses, you will significantly narrow the field, leaving you with a smaller, more specialized selection from which to choose.
Activities
Not all sunglasses are created equal; different activities require different sunglasses. If you plan to wear them while riding a motorcycle, you should invest in a pair designed specifically to stay in place securely and protect your eyes at very high speeds. Non-purpose built sunglasses may only keep the wind out of your eyes at speeds up to 35 mph, but specialized glasses protect your eyes at highway speeds as well. Take similar considerations into account when choosing sunglasses for skiing or snowboarding; or for outdoor sports, such as beach volleyball and jogging. If you move around a lot -- or you engage in activities that have you travelling at fast speeds -- your sunglasses should withstand the strain and abuse to which they are likely to be subjected.
Comfort
If you only wear your sunglasses briefly, then comfort may not concern you. If, however, you work outside or spend a lot of time in the bright light of the sun, cheap or ill-fitted glasses can irritate your ears and the bridge of your nose. Choose a frame that remains comfortable throughout the day to avoid irritating your skin. Barrel-hinges or spring-hinges allow the fames to flex around the sides of your face, so your head won't feel pinched. Use rubber nosepieces and earpieces, both to soften the points of contact on your skin and to prevent the glasses from slipping, when you get sweaty or wet.
Effectiveness
People wear sunglasses for reasons beyond merely diminishing the bright light of the sun. Quality sunglasses have an SPF rating so you will know how much general protection your eyes will have. Lenses may also be polarized to reduce glare. Photo chromic lenses darken in response to ultraviolet radiation, so you see more clearly when in the shade and enjoy more eye protection when facing bright light. Blue Blockers employ a yellow tint to filter out blue and UV light. Darker yellows or plum-tinted lenses are favored among wearers who suffer from macular degeneration.
Price
Sunglasses can be found in nearly every price range, and the differences between a 20 dollar pair and a 350 dollar pair may not be readily apparent. In some cases, brand name glasses may cost more than the comparable generic, but the price difference is not typically due to the brand name alone. More expensive sunglasses employ more expensive technologies to offer increased comfort and performance. Cheap glasses may achieve UV protection through a thin protective coating over regular glass or plastic lenses; while more expensive sunglasses craft the lenses themselves from protective materials. While price is a factor, quality and use should also help determine the amount of money you are willing to spend.
