How to Tell If a Purse Is an Authentic Kate Spade

Kate Spade's iconic, square-shaped handbags are among the most copied in the world, according to Kate Spade's general counsel Barbara Kolsun. Kolsun estimates that for every authentic Kate Spade bag sold in 2002, one knockoff Kate Spade was sold, too. Often, dealers try to pass off these fake bags as the real thing. Some fakes are obvious, but others are so well done that you could be fooled if you don't know what to look for.

Instructions

Shop in the right places. You might luck into an authentic Kate Spade at a thrift store or consignment shop, but you won't find a real Kate Spade purse at a mall kiosk, purse party, flea market, street vendor booth or online auction site. If you spot a Kate Spade bag while you're shopping at one of these places, the chances of it being the real thing are pretty slim.

Look at the price tag. An authentic Kate Spade purse costs between $175 and $595 in 2010. While it's always possible to score a bargain, if you're offered a price that's considerably lower than $175, there's a good chance the bag is a fake.

Check the logo. Authentic Kate Spade bags have the Kate Spade New York logo printed on the fabric, on a tag stitched to the fabric or embossed in a leather purse or tag. Compare the logo on the bag to the Kate Spade logo on the company website: Kate Spade should be in larger, all lowercase letters with New York in smaller, all-capital letters underneath. If the logo is on fabric tag, make sure it's sewn onto the purse with neat, straight stitches. A glued logo is a sign of a fake.

Check the straps. Real Kate Spade bags come with straps in just two lengths: one that slips over the shoulder and one that's designed to be clutched in your hand. If the straps are a different length, the bag is a phony.

Run your hands down the sides of the bag. Real Kate Spade bags are pleated like an accordion, but fakes usually stick with straight sides.

Check the patterns against the patterns on the Kate Spade website. Though Kate Spade turns out new designs every season, fakes often show up in patterns that Kate Spade has never produced. If you're not sure, check with the Kate Spade customer service line at 888-999-KATE to confirm whether a particular line is one made by Kate Spade.
