How to Tie a Hip Sash

A sash can transform an outfit from drab to fabulous with a few twists and turns of the fabric. The next time your sundress, tunic shirt, long skirt or even your wedding dress need a little extra color or texture, then consider adding a sash around the hips. The fantastic thing about sashes is the wide assortment of colors, patterns, textures and fabrics that are available to choose from for your outfit. In addition, the sash is an easy DIY project if you cannot find the perfect one to fit your style.

Instructions

Fold the sash in half width-wise, if it is wide. Do not fold it if the width is less than 3 inches wide.

Center the sash in the lower middle of your back. The sash sides should be even with your hip bones when you bring the sides around. If not, then lower or raise the sash on your back before tying.

Bring the sides of the sash around to the front of your body. The sides should be level and even with each other.

Tie the sash in the center of your hips.

Fold the sash in half width-wise if it is wide. Do not fold the sash if the width is less than 3 inches wide.

Center the sash in your lower back so it is even with your front hip bones. Slide the sash fabric to your right or left side so one side of your body has two thirds of the sash fabric, and the other side has one third of the fabric.

Wrap the longer side around the front of your hips to the meet the shorter end.

Tie the two ends together in a bow or double knot on your right or left hip bone.

Fold the sash in half width-wise if it is wide. Do not fold it if the width is less than 3 inches wide.

Center the sash in the center of your hips on the front of your body.

Wrap the sash around your hip bones to the center of your back. Make sure the sash is even on both sides.

Tie the fabric into a double knot or bow to secure it. Make adjustments to the sash to center it properly in the back.
