Tips for How to Accessorize

Wearing the right accessories can make or break your look. What looks best on your favorite celebrity may not look that great on you. Accessories can be used to draw attention to your best features and to take attention away from your flaws. Experiment with different accessories to find the look that works best for you.

When accessorizing with jewelry, your clothes, destination and facial features play an important part. Avoid short jewelry if you have a round face. Wear necklaces that are at least 24 inches in length and long earrings because they will lean out and lengthen your face. Wear short earrings and necklaces to shorten a long face. Don't be afraid to mix metals; it's considered modern to mix gold with silver. Wear layered necklaces or wear your necklace as a bracelet. Men can wear a luxury watch when dressed in a business suit, or a sporty watch to flatter a casual look.

Instead of wearing a scarf around your neck, wear it as a belt around your waist or use it to hold your hair in place. Experiment with different colors, fabrics and patterns. Adjust the way you tie your scarf to your style. Tie a bandanna around your neck in a western style when opting for a casual look. Tie a silk scarf around your neck for a dressy look. If you are a man, use scarves to update a casual look. Your masculinity will not suffer if you tuck the ends of your scarf into your shirt and wear scarves that are plain; purchase scarves with no more than four colors.

The right handbag can flatter your figure. If you are very tall, avoid small handbags because your height will overwhelm the small bag. Choose a large handbag that stands out to take the attention off your height. To draw attention to your cleavage, use a clutch that you can tuck into your waist or a bag with a short strap that falls underneath your armpit. Fuller figures look slimmer with large handbags. If you are short, a long bag that hangs near your thighs elongates you. Man bags are often leather and worn across the body, postman-style, or hanging off the shoulder.

A hat must match the shade and style of your outfit and, most importantly, it must match your complexion. Pale skin can benefit from a fuchsia-colored hat to give the appearance of some color. If you are under 30 years of age, pastel-colored hats are flattering. Try on hats in the store before purchasing. Wear your hat at home before your special occasion so you get used to its fit. Use hair grips to pin your hat to your hair to keep it from falling off your head. Men can adjust their hats to their style. A fedora can flatter a casual or dressed up look. A newspaper boy hat and baseball cap work well with casual and sporty styles.
