What Kind of Handle to Put on Clutch Bag?

A clutch bag may look like an oversized coin purse that has little versatility, but by adding a handle, it can gain new uses. The only decision you have to make is whether to continue to hang onto the purse or sling it over your shoulder instead for easier portability. Once you decide, you are off to the store to get all the right accessories to update your purse.

The options can be endless when deciding on the type or style of handle for your clutch purse. Knowing whether you want to still carry it in one of your hands or get it out of the way by putting it on your shoulder will determine what direction to go when choosing a handle. Some people don't like feeling like they are carrying anything. If this is you, then choosing to sling it over your shoulder might be the answer.

Most clutch purses have shorter handles than purses meant to be carried over the shoulder. These types of handles allow you to continue to carry the purse in your hand. Examples of these handles would be simple thin, flexible straps, which could be made from a variety of materials, like leather or even plastic. The material the strap is made from should match the style of your purse.

Another choice for a handle might be something that is not flexible, but rigid instead. Two skinny bamboo circles with a diameter of about 5 inches would be a good example. An earthy purse might look nice with such a handle added to it. Or, maybe you have an already-cut pattern out of wood that might look good on the clutch you use for daytime. If you choose to have the precut wood as your handles, color should be considered when making your purchase.

Choosing a handle that lets you carry your clutch purse on your shoulder might be a longer chain type of handle. This style might look better on a clutch that is more for evening attire. If you are choosing a handle like this, take the time to select a style that complements the purse. If you like a longer handle, but are working with a daytime clutch, consider matching a color from the purse to accent it.
