When people think of veils, the ones that usually come to mind are wedding veils worn by brides as an accessory. However, there are different types of veils that serve a variety of purposes for women. From fashion accessories to religious clothing, veils are much more than just the white tulle of weddings.
Wedding Veils
Many brides wear veils with their wedding gowns. Historically, wedding veils were a sign of virginity, and in the cases of arranged marriages, the brides weren't revealed to the grooms until after the ceremony. Today, veils are fashion accessories for brides. They are chosen to complement the bride's wedding gown. Some veils are also chosen based on a bride's cultural heritage.
Veils for Religious Life
Some women who choose a religious vocation, such as Catholic nuns, wear veils as part of their lifestyle. These veils are worn to cover the nuns' hair and are made of the same material as their habits. In Christianity, head covering is usually based on interpretation of 1 Corinthians 11:2-16.
Prayer Veils
Some women wear veils when they pray or during religious services. These veils can be lace or other material and can range from traditional mantillas and chapel veils to snoods and modern scarves. Women who wear veils to pray and worship feel called by God to do so, and they wear the veils for the same reasons nuns wear veils with their habits.
Daily Veils
Some women wear veils during their daily life. The majority of women who wear veils daily choose to do so for religious reasons. The types of veils range from mantillas and snoods to kerchiefs and bonnets. Which type of veil women wear depends on their religious practices. For example, Christian traditions may allow a woman to wear a kerchief to cover her head while Muslim traditions may require a hijab.
