What Is a Concho Belt?

Concho belts were originally created by the Navajo. They are traditionally designed from shell-shaped silver disks linked together to form a belt with leather strips. The designs can range from very simple to inlaid with turquoise or coral.

In the mid to late 1800s, the Navajo began working with silver. Many of their designs have Spanish influence. The silver used in their creations was often melted down from U.S. and Mexican coins.

First phase concho belts are the oldest form of this Navajo art. In these belts, the silver was hammered into disks and slotted with the leather run through the slots to link. Later, craftsmen added design to the top of the disks and added stones. Loops for the leather were soldered to the back of the concho.

The word "concho" is used synonymously with "concha," which is the Spanish word for shell.

In the early 2000s, many American Indian tribes, as well as commercial designers, utilize the concho design in not only belts, but purses, jewelry, tie tacks, fabric design, and other artistic endeavors. Concho belts are worn by both men and women.

Before purchasing a concho belt for a specific purpose, pay close attention to the dimensions of the conchos. Many are too large to be worn through belt loops.
