How to Tie a Jewish Head Scarf

Wearing a head scarf or tichel is a tradition among married Jewish women. This act is part of the Tzniut, a set of modesty guidelines for married Jewish couples. In Judaism a women's hair is seen as private and sensual part of her appearance once she is married. These scarves can be made of plain colored fabric or brightly colored pattern fabrics. With a little practice, tying a tichel can become a simple process

Instructions

    1

Fold the square tichel scarf in half, folding one corner up to its opposite corner.

    2

Lay the tichel on top of your head with the corners you joined pointing down your back and the other two points laying on either side of your head. This will place the long flat part of the scarf across the top of the brow.

    3

Take the two points lying on either side of the head and bring them behind your head and tie them. The corner that points down your back should be on top of the now tied sides.

    4

Tuck the third point up under the two points that you just tied. The tails of the other two points will still need to be tied again.

    5

Pull the tails of the remaining points over the bun you have created and tie them again.

    6

Tuck the two small ends that are left over into the bun after tying.
