In the 1950s, fashion was all about femininity, beauty and etiquette, and handbags were designed to match the spirit of the times, according to the book "Fashion Accessories" by Olivier Gerval. Women sought fashionable bags paraded on the silver screen, as handbags toted by the likes of Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe were in demand. The industry even catered to the more frugal shopper, offering cheaper models fashioned out of less expensive materials.
Etiquette
According to Stephanie Pedersen's book "Handbags: What Every Woman Should Know," there was a purse etiquette recommended to the 1950s woman: Women who were top heavy with broad shoulders were advised to avoid purses with short straps, as to not add more heft above the waistline. Similarly, women who are pear shaped were warned not carry bags with long straps that fell below the waistline. Other tidbits of etiquette advised women to carry bags that complemented their size. For example, petite women should stick with smaller purses and large women should tote more substantial bags.
Clutch
A clutch was the desired purse for evening wear and came in a myriad of styles and shapes, as stated in the book "Making Handbags: Retro, Chic, Luxurious" by Ellen Goldstein-Lynch, Sarah Mullins and Nicole Malone. Defined as a small strapless bag, the styles ranged from the conservative envelop shape to the more extravagant expandable accordion silhouette. From glitzy sequins to shiny satins, 1950s clutches were designed to be a sparkling accoutrement to evening apparel.
Box Bag
The box bag was the bag of choice for day wear in the 1950s, as cited in Stephanie Pedersen's book. The cube-like purse was fashioned out of many materials from raffia to snake skin. Finishing off this bag was a sculpted top handle. Some box bags tended to resemble a one-handled lunch box, while others a two handled cosmetic case.
By the mid 1950s a new box bag became fashionable, made out of "Lucite," which was a durable designer acrylic glass. Loved by movie stars and showgirls, the luxurious Lucite was expensive, thus used for only high-end box bags. Cheaper plastic bags, made of less expensive, more breakable plastic were sold at the five-and-dime store.
Satchel
The shoulder bag, also known as the satchel, was popular for daytime and sometimes casual wear. One of the most stylish satchels of the decade was Coco Chanel's "2.55" bag, as stated in the book "Hand Bags: a Lexicon of Style" by Valerie Steele and Laird Borrelli. This quilted bag, with its long gilt chain, is still popular today. Other purses for day wear included the over-size shoulder bags, popular for travel and leisure and smaller pouch-like satchels for weekend wear --- both were made of cowhide.
The 'Kelly' Purse
When Grace Kelly used a Hermes "Sac Haut Courroies" purse to distract the paparazzi away from her baby bump she brought attention to what became one of fashion's most iconic bags, according to Anna Johnson's book "Handbags: the Power of the Purse." Though the purse was created in 1935, it was renamed the "Kelly" in 1956 after the actress. Rectangular, with a handle that made it more suitable to be worn on the arm, the Kelly bag became one of the most sought-after purses for the mature, sophisticated 1950s lady.
