Pashmina shawls are popular fashion accessories for women and girls. A pashmina shawl is a soft, lightweight wrap that comes in a wide variety of colors. It can be worn with casual or dress attire and can be wrapped around the shoulders, neck or arms in a variety of ways.
Origins
Pashmina is the name for a special, soft type of wool taken from the underbelly of goats found only in remote regions of Central Asia and not in America or anywhere else in the world. The word "pashmina" comes from the Persian word for wool, "pashm."
The Original Pashmina Shawl
The original Pashmina shawls, such as those created and worn for centuries, were made from the pashmina wool directly from the goat and not mixed with any other fibers or synthetic materials. A true pashmina shawl is more expensive than other shawls due to the unique nature of the wool and the need for hand work on the delicate wool.
Cashmere and Silk
Cashmere and silk are used in today's pashmina shawls, which are easier to find and cheaper to produce. Cashmere and silk pashmina shawls, though not the original pashmina, are still a nice product, because they are soft, lightweight and have a sheen from the silk fibers. They are less expensive than original pashminas because they can be made in mass quantities and with materials more easily found than pashmina wool.
Viscose and Acrylic
Viscose and acrylic are synthetic fibers and are used in some so-called pashmina shawls; they are not the original pashmina shawl handed down from generation to generation. However, pashimina-type shawls made with viscose are easier to find in stores, more durable and cheaper in price. They provide the same style as a pashmina made with pashmina wool and have gained popularity along with the style.
