Ways to Tie Head Scarves

Scarves are a perennial fashion plus because there are so many ways to wear them. Influences from the Middle East, Asia and Africa have brought a wealth of ethnic style to Western fashion. Colors, patterns and fabrics of head scarves, as well as the many techniques for tying them, add an exotic or glamorous accent to nearly any look. As recently as the middle 20th century, scarves have had a place in high fashion, such as the Hollywood-like glamour of Marilyn Monroe or Grace Kelly.

For a basic headwrap, fold a square scarf into a triangle or start with a large triangular scarf or bandanna. You'll probably want a scarf bigger than you think you will. Place the bottom side of the triangle across your forehead, with the top corner draped over your head, then cross the side corners in back. Bring the top corner up and over the crossed ends, then tie the two ends together, tight against the nape.

For a rosette style, drape a square scarf (folded into a triangle) sideways, with all three ends brought together at one side. Twist the ends together into a single rope. Once it is solid, continue twisting and allow that rope to roll into a large spiral. Tuck the ends into the knot. Secure with a bobby pin only if necessary.

A turban tie uses the triangle shape also, but this time with the knot in front. Place the bottom side of the triangle at your nape and bring all three corners forward over your forehead. Cross the two side corners of the scarf and tie a half-knot at the top of your forehead, and bring the third corner up and tuck it behind the knot. For a glamorous look, ala Marilyn Monroe, a scarf folded into a narrow band can be worn like a headband, laid across the forehead and tied at the nape of the neck. Or a scarf of light, stiff fabric could be tied around the base of a sophisticated ponytail and fluffed out. Then you have a look worthy of Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn.
