Cambridge Dictionaries Online says a corsage is "a small decorative group of flowers which a woman pins to her clothes or ties around her wrist, usually for a special occasion." Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary broadens the definition to "an arrangement of flowers worn as a fashion accessory." By this latter definition, a corsage could be worn by a man or woman, although the small floral arrangements worn by men are more typically referred to as boutonnieres.
History of Corsages
Originally, a corsage referred to the bodice of a woman's dress. Because a floral bouquet often adorned the center of a dress, the bouquet came to be known as "a corsage." The Ancient Greeks wore corsages at weddings to ward off evil spirits.
Types of Corsages
A corsage traditionally consists of a single flower or of a small bouquet of flowers. Although originally worn in the center of the bodice, it is most commonly worn pinned to the shoulder, attached to a woman's hair or on the woman's ankle, neck or wrist by way of an elasticized band attached to the flowers.
Small candy or other embellishments may be embedded within the floral bouquet. In the 1950s, corsages were commonly made from fruit, and might be worn on a dress or hat. During the 1950s and 1960s, candy corsages made completely from small candies became popular for young girls.
Common Use of a Corsage
Corsages typically are worn for special occasions, including weddings, birthdays, Mother's Day, anniversaries, homecoming celebrations or any special event. Any small flower might be included in a corsage, although tradition holds that Mother's Day corsages are made from carnations.
