How to Price Donated Clothing

Pricing donated clothing for potential sale at a flea market, online or yard sale is a moderately challenging process. The condition of the clothing, whether it is an in-season or in-style item and the brand of the item all factor into the overall pricing strategy.

Instructions

Sort the donated clothes into piles or sections. Have a section for bottoms, tops, accessories, outerwear and footwear for men, women and children. If you have enough donations, have a section for teens/youth as well. Place any clothing in need of buttons, major cleaning or repair in a pile marked 'For Review.'

Hold up each piece of clothing and turn it inside and out. Reverse once you have reviewed the inside. Review the exterior of the item. Read the tag -- find out who made the item and what fabric the item is made of. Place a price sticker on the clothing with your desired price. Give items from well-known, exclusive brands higher prices than generic or unlabeled items. Price items lower depending on their age and condition -- the older and poorer the condition, the lower the price. A good rule of thumb is that any donated clothing should be 50 percent off its original price, if it is in ideal shape. Deduct 10 percent off that price if the item is older and another 10 percent if it is in less than ideal shape.

Place items that you do not feel you can price properly in a pile. Consider having a $1, $2 and $5 rack for older, generic or hard-to-price items. These racks are also a good place for off-season, older items.
