How to Restore a Straw Cowboy Hat

Straw cowboy hats are great summer accessories. Whether you're heading to a fair or festival, weeding in the garden or on your way to a honky tonk, straw cowboy hats offer needed protection from the sun. Straw cowboy hats are lightweight and aerated. Straw cowboy hats that have been tucked away in the back of a closet can be misshapen and sit oddly on your head. Restore your straw cowboy hat with steam.

Instructions

Brush your straw cowboy hat to remove any excess dirt or dust. You may need to wash it gently by hand with soap and water before reshaping. Place a bowl in the top of the hat. Set the hat right side up on a hard surface.

Run a garment steamer or iron set on "steam" along the misshapen parts of the hat. Get the steamer as close to the hat as possible without touching it directly. Steam the hat until the straw becomes moist.

If you don't have a steamer or a good steam iron, boil a pot of water on the stove. Wear oven mitts or gloves as you hold the hat upside down over the boiling pot. Wait for the straw to become damp, then quickly put a bowl inside the top of the hat and set it down right side up on the counter.

Use your gloved hands to smooth the hat around the bowl. Be careful and gentle as you reshape the hat to its desired look.

Place a weighted object on the brim of the hat to keep it from curling up. Anything that allows the hat to lay flat without compromising the brim's integrity will do. If your cowboy hat is designed to curl at the sides, it most likely has a wire in the brim edge. In this case, don't weight the entire brim down. Use your hands to shape the wire to your style, then weight the inside of the brim down to keep it from warping.

Remove the bowl from the hat once it's completely dry. It is best to leave the hat sitting on a flat surface overnight to ensure the straw has dried.
