Outrageous Hat Ideas

Hats can do so much more than keep the sun from your eyes. These headpieces can capture your personality while showcasing the latest fashion trends. Demonstrate how unique you can be with an outrageous hat design. Whether you're wearing it to a crazy hat party or to lunch with friends, create a one-of-a-kind hat that will turn heads toward your headpiece.

Size

Size matters when it comes to creating outrageous hats, so make one that's extremely big or surprisingly small for your head. Take inspiration from Kentucky Derby accessories and create a brim that stretches widely in every direction around your head, or wear a top hat with a head piece that reaches a few feet up in the air. Smaller hats can be wild, too. Wear a headpiece originally made for dolls or children and keep it on your head using pins or clips.

Shapes

Everyday hats already come in a variety of shapes, but take yours up a notch by wearing a headpiece in a bizarre form. Create a hat shaped after famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower or Egyptian pyramids. Give a baseball hat's bill new meaning by shaping the entire headpiece to look like a duck with a head drawn over the front and wings extending from either side. Foods, flowers and furniture are a few other shapes that can give a hat outrageous appeal.

Tricks

Make an eye-catching hat by incorporating a few gadgets and tricks into the accessory. Adorn the hat with a squirt gun disguised as a flower to give a wet surprise anytime someone comes too close. A hat with a sturdy, circular brim can hold a small toy train that chugs around secured tracks. Or incorporate a drink holder into a hat with a long straw to reach from the beverage down into your mouth.

Materials

The material of yoru hat can also make it an outrageous accessory. Instead of straw, make a wide-brimmed hat woven with strands of plastic bags. Aluminum foil can be shaped into any hat design you dream of and will be especially eye-catching when it's illuminated by the sun. Create a hat that's seen at night by outlining the headpiece with string lights lit by a traveling battery pack, or paint a hat with colored glow-in-the-dark paints that will allow you to shine in the dark.
