How to Tell If a Gold Chain Is Fake?

Gold is one of the three valuable metals, the other two being platinum and silver. Gold does not rust, corrode or get affected by the elements and can retain its form for thousands of years. This rare metal can be used to express something that is special and enduring when given as jewelry or other types of gifts.

Instructions

Use the magnifying glass to check for markings. A number paired with the letter K will tell you how many karats the gold is. For example, 10k means the piece is 10 karats, 14k means it is 14 karat gold, and so on. Anything less than 10k is not considered real gold. If you see a GP (gold plated), GF (gold filled) or GL (gold layered), it means the chain is not real gold. This gold marking law only apply in the U.S. Other countries do not require it.

Use the magnifying glass to look for signs of discoloration. Remember that real gold does not rust, corrode or get affected by the elements. If you see that some part of the chain look greenish or black, that means it is fake.

Use a magnet on the gold chain. Gold does not have any magnetic property. If it gets attracted to the magnet, it is not gold.

Apply a droplet of nitric acid on the gold chain. Gold does not corrode, therefore it will not react to acid. Nitric acid is dangerous so use caution when conducting this test.
