How to Wrap an African Headdress

Worn all over the continent -- and the world -- African headdresses are a symbol of beauty, authority and pride. The cloth headdress is typically brightly colored and patterned, but neutral colors are also appropriate. With the right amount of fabric, you can tie your own headdress and wear it with or without accompanying African clothing.

Instructions

Hold the ends of the fabric and stretch it out in front of you so that it crosses the wingspan of your arms. Fold one side of the fabric over diagonally, forming a twist in the middle of the length of fabric.

Place the twisted section of fabric at the back of the head. Stand with your body slightly bent at the waist so that the length of the fabric falls forward, toward the ground.

Cross the left side of fabric over to the right side of your head and hold it near the nape of your neck. Bring the right side over the left so that the ends of fabric meet in the back.

Tie the ends of fabric together. You should have just enough length of fabric left to make a small knot.

Tuck in the ends of fabric near the crown of your head, teasing them so that they stand up rather than fall flat. This will give the African head wrap a regal, crown-like shape.
