What Can I Put on an Old Alligator Leather Purse to Make It Shine?

While alligator purses may not be for everyone, some enjoy the look of an accessory made of alligator or other exotic skin. No alligator skin purse has exactly the same pattern, making each one unique. Most alligator products come from the American alligator, which was taken off the endangered species list in the 1960s. However, without proper care, your alligator purse could become extinct.

Clean the Purse

An alligator purse that has lost its shine may simply be dirty. Use a damp, soft cloth to clean the outside of the purse. Do not use a brush or paper towels, as they may scratch the skin. You can use a cleaner with a soft cloth if it is specifically made for exotic skins, but avoid cleaners containing alcohol and other harsh chemicals. The alligator skin must be cleaned before any conditioning product is applied; otherwise, the dust and dirt will be rubbed into the skin. Fill the purse with tissue paper to help it retain its shape after cleaning.

Condition the Purse

A natural way to moisturize alligator skin is with beeswax. Rub the beeswax onto the skin with a soft cloth carefully so as not to damage the skin, then buff off the extra wax. For a shiny finish, apply a conditioner that is safe for exotic skins with a soft cloth and polish it with shoe polish that is either clear or the same color as the purse. Conditioning and polishing the purse will help maintain its moisture and shine.

How to Store the Purse

Store the purse out of direct sunlight to avoid discoloring the skin. The humidity level should be moderate, neither too dry or too damp. If the purse is not used regularly, store it in a bag designed for purse storage to keep it from becoming dusty and drying out. Stuff the purse with tissue paper and make sure any handles are not bending the purse to maintain its shape.

Saving a Damaged Purse

If an alligator purse has been neglected for a long period of time, it may not be salvageable. Once a purse is discolored from sun exposure, the original color cannot be restored. Exposure to water or not conditioning the skin regularly may cause it to dry rot and the purse is not repairable. If the purse is not dry-rotted, apply a very thin layer of baby oil or mineral oil, following the grain of the skin and wiping off any excess with a clean cloth. Allow the oil to soak in and apply another thin coat. Bend the purse gently in various directions to soften the skin. Continue with the baby oil applications until the skin is moisturized and supple.
