What is a Wristlet?
A wristlet is a small, rectangular purse. They are generally larger than a wallet, but smaller than a regular size handbag. Wristlets differ in size according to style and manufacturer, but most are approximately 4 inches wide and 7 inches long. Wristlets have a zipper that runs the length of the purse and a long, skinny loop at one end. The carrier uses the loop to hook the wristlet over her wrist, hence the name "wristlet."
Uses of Wristlets
There are several benefits to using a wristlet instead of (or in addition to) a regular size purse. Use it to organize small, fragile or frequently used items inside of a regular purse. For example, you can use a wristlet to store lip gloss, lip stick, a compact mirror or other beauty products that may leak or become lost in a bigger purse. You can also use a wristlet in place of a wallet or traditional change purse. You can keep loose change, dollars, a driver's license, credit cards and checks together inside of a wristlet and keep it in the larger purse.
Wristlets can also replace a regular size purse. Women typically use wristlets when they are going out to a dance club or bar. Since you can comfortably wear wristlets over your wrist, it leaves your hands free. You don't have to carry a full-size or heavy bag, which is also convenient in crowded places.

Numerous retailers sell wristlets. Depending on the manufacturer and brand, wristlets can be expensive or inexpensive. One popular, high-end manufacturer of wristlets is Coach. Coach wristlets currently cost between $48 and $200. Other wristlet manufacturers include Fossil, Vera Bradley, Juicy Couture and Dooney & Burke. Many retail stores including Macy's, Target, JCPenney and Walmart carry wristlets. Several retailers also sell wristlets online through Amazon or store websites.
How to Make a Wristlet at Home
If you do not want to purchase a wristlet, you can make one at home with a few supplies. To make a hand-made wristlet, you will need fabric, a zipper, a sewing machine and a thin piece of leather (or other sturdy material for the strap). To assemble the wristlet, cut the fabric into the desired shape and size, making sure the two pieces match exactly. Use a sewing machine to sew the pieces of fabric together on three sides, leaving an opening at the top for the zipper. Attach the zipper according to the manufacturer's directions. Sew the two ends of the leather to one end of the wristlet and ensure that it is tightly secured. You will have a fashionable, home-made wristlet for your next night out on the town!
