How to Wear the Hijabi

The Arabic word "hijab" actually refers to any form of modest dress worn by men or women. In the west, however, it is typically understood to refer to a woman's head scarf that covers most or all of the hair, often the chest and neck and sometimes parts of the face as well. Many Muslim women wear the hijab as a sign of personal piety, while others wear it as a fashion statement or declaration of Arab or Muslim identity.

Instructions

Place the cloth over your head with the left side hanging a few inches lower than the right. The cloth should be long enough to be draped over your head and have each side reach to about your elbows

Bring the ends of the cloth together behind your neck.

Pull the cloth snugly but comfortably around your head as you pin the two sides together at the nape of your neck.

Take the cloth's longer end up over your head and around to your left side. Smooth out any creases in the cloth that may form as you do so.

Continue to bring the cloth around and under your chin to the right and, if you have enough cloth left, up over your head and around your head to the left one more time.

Pin the cloth in place at the side of your head or under your ear. Adjust the cloth as needed to make it comfortable and to smooth out any wrinkles.
