How to Put on an al-Amira Hijab

The al-Amira hijab, developed in Syria, is made of a lightweight knit material and requires no pins or folding to wear. This makes it an excellent choice for those new to hijab or women looking for a low-maintenance hijab style. Al-Amira hijabs come in styles that are embellished with beads, ribbon, lace, contrasting strips of fabric or rhinestones. They are available in shorter lengths that cover only the head and neck, and also in styles long enough to cover the entire upper torso. What makes the al-Amira hijab popular is its convenience and versatility.

Instructions

Putting on a One-Piece Al-Amira

    1

Unfold the al-Amira hijab. The al-Amira hijab consists of a tube that is wider at the bottom than at the top. Make sure that the hijab is right side out by checking for fabric edges or embellishments.

    2

Pick up the hijab by the wider end with your hands at the ten and two o'clock positions and the center seam of the hijab at the six o' clock position. Gather the hijab into your hands so that you can see through it to the narrow end. This is similar to the way you might gather a stocking before pulling it on.

    3

Slip the wide end of the hijab over your head, pulling it over your neck and chest, releasing more of the hijab fabric as needed. This is similar to pulling a turtleneck sweater over your head, except that you will not pull your head through the narrow end.

    4

Check your work in the mirror. The center seam should be beneath your chin, the edges of the narrow end of the hijab should frame your face and the top of the narrow end should fall somewhere between your hairline and your eyebrows. Adjust the hijab if it is crooked or bunched. Tuck in any hair that might be showing.

Putting on a Two-Piece Al-Amira

    5

Unfold the al-Amira hijab, making sure you have both pieces. The smaller piece will cover your head from your forehead to the nape of your neck. The larger piece will cover your ears, neck and chest.

    6

Pick up the smaller piece. This is usually a tube of fabric like a large headband, but it can also be more like a knit swimming cap. Turn the piece so that any embellishments face away from you, and are at the bottom.

    7

Pull the smaller piece over your head so that the bottom edge frames your hairline all the way around your head. If your hair is long, it need not cover all of your hair at the back.

    8

Find the wide end of the larger piece. Pick up the piece by the wide end, gathering it into your hands until you can see through it to the narrow end. The center seam should face down.

    9

Slip your head through the wide end and pull it over your head, neck and chest, releasing more of the fabric as needed. The opening of the narrow end should go no further back than the crown of your head.

    10

Check your work in the mirror. Adjust the hijab if it is crooked or bunched. Tuck in any hair that might be showing.
