Uses for Shawls

Shrugs, scarves and stoles are all shawls. Traditionally, shawls are large pieces of cloth women wear to accessorize outfits and to provide light warmth. Shawls can be made from fabrics such as silk, wool, cotton and fur. Because shawls have no definite shape or size, they can vary from piece to piece.

Accessories

Shawls are traditionally used as an accessory to clothing. Some shawls are primarily used for warmth and only worn in cold weather, including wool and fur stoles. Other times the shawl's function is merely decorative. These shawls are often made from thin fabrics like lace or silk. The shawl is worn wrapped around the shoulders or upper body or as a neck scarf. The shawl's color and design usually complements the outfit.

Home Dcor

Decorative shawls can be used as wall hangings or for other decorative purposes around the home. High-value silk and lace shawls with intricate designs may be too delicate to wear. Instead, they can be hung on walls or displayed in a frame. This allows people to enjoy the shawl's full design, which may be obscured when the cloth is worn wrapped around the body. Some shawls are used as table or lamp coverings as well.

Head Wraps

Thin shawls can be worn as head wraps by women who enjoy the color of large head coverings. Light fabric shawls such as cotton and silk work best for this purpose. These shawls also keep sun off the head in warm weather. Women with thick, curly hair use head shawls to keep their hair up and away from the face. Women who have hair loss cover their heads with head wraps to hide thin spots. Shawls can be tied or fastened in place with hairpins or hair bands.

Traveling

Many women keep shawls in their purses or bags while traveling. Shawls can help women stay comfortable with changing temperatures during travel. Shawls can also serve as a pillow or eye-covering while trying to sleep on a plane, train or bus. Pashmina cloth shawls serve this purpose best as they are soft, warm and can be folded and stored in a small place.

Prayer Shawl

Prayer shawls are used in the Jewish and Christian traditions. In the Christian tradition the shawl is blessed in the name of a saint or deceased family member and then given to someone who is ill or in need of spiritual help. These shawls are a symbol of comfort and community support. A Jewish prayer shawl, called a tallit, is a wool shawl Jewish men wear

during prayer. The tallit is woven with a special winding pattern as a sign of religious importance.
