Monet began as Monocraft Products Company in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1929, manufacturing gold, silver or brass-plated monograms for purses. The company changed its name to Monet in 1937 and began producing classic jewelry at affordable prices. It is one of the largest jewelry manufacturers in the world. Monet earrings are prized for looking more expensive than the price tag. Today the materials include silver- or gold-tone earrings in sterling silver, as well as "gold-mixed metal" or "silver-mixed metal." This costume jewelry can tarnish, as the metals lose luster. It's easy to bring these pieces back to life.

Instructions

Cleaning

    1

Use a soft toothbrush or cloth to gently clean your Monet earrings. Rub softly to get out dust and dirt with a product geared to clean costume jewelry. Do not use abrasive chemicals or even soap and water on the metal, as these can harm costume jewelry.

    2

Keep moisture from stored jewelry. Put your Monet earrings separated in a pouch or jewelry box to avoid dust and moisture that can tarnish the metal. This also keeps the earrings from getting scratched.

    3

Clean frequently worn jewelry each week. If you wear your Monet infrequently, clean the jewelry after you finish wearing the earrings.

Spray Painting

    4

Lay your clean Monet earrings on a flat surface that's covered by plastic. Choose a well-ventilated area.

    5

Place tape over the metal post.

    6

Choose gold or silver enamel spray paint, or change the original finish and pick another color. Spray over the earrings' metal finish to get rid of any tarnish. Follow directions on the can and let dry about 20 minutes. Do one side at a time.

    7

Use a clear acrylic coating of spray afterward for a finishing coat, if desired. For smaller pieces of jewelry, you can paint over the earrings with a clear coat of nail polish.
