How to Tie a Head Scarf for Fashion

People wear head scarves all over the world for a variety of reasons and meanings. For example, in some countries, wearing head scarves can show one's social status of wealth or poverty. People also wear scarves for religious reasons. In the U.S., women wear head scarves mainly for fashion as well as to protect hair from the sun.

Instructions

Pull your hair back and make a low ponytail.

Fold a 36-inch or extra large square silk scarf diagonally into a triangle.

Place the folded edge of the triangle at your hairline.

Pull the two triangle edges back tightly under your ponytail and tie the edges together.

Twist the tied ends of the scarf together with your ponytail, then wrap it around until you have a tight bun at your nape. Tuck the edges of your scarf and hair under your bun.

Select an extra large, square colorful scarf, also called a "kanga," a traditional, East African wrap.

Fold the scarf, diagonally in half into a triangle.

Fold the triangle in half. Your scarf will look like a long, wide band.

Place the folded scarf across the back of your head. Pull each end tight towards the front.

Cross the ends around the front of your head at the hairline, then wrap the scarf towards the back of your head. Cross the ends again, bringing the ends back to the front.

Knot the ends in the front at your forehead. Tuck the ends under.

Fold an extra large, square silk scarf diagonally in half into a triangle.

Cover your hairline and forehead with the folded edge of the scarf.

Tie the scarf into a loose knot behind one of your ears or on the back of your head and let the scarf ends hang over one shoulder.

Fold a square head scarf in half diagonally into a triangle.

Wrap the scarf over your head with the folded edge at your hairline.

Cross the corners of the scarf under your chin, then tie the ends into a knot at the back of your neck.

Pull the back of the scarf under the knot and leave the ends loose, letting your hair hang out from the bottom. You can also tuck the scarf ends in.

Select a sarong---a loose-fitting, rectangular garment usually wrapped around the waist to make a skirt.

Hold the rectangle of the sarong over your head and wrap the edge of the sarong around your forehead.

Gather the sides to the back at your nape or base of your neck and twist the sarong. If you have short hair, twist the sarong at your nape.

Twist the sarong in the same direction and tie it into a knot at your nape.

Drape the ends of the sarong down your back or bring the ends to the front to hang down one side. The sarong will cover all of your hair on the top and sides of your head. If you have long hair, it will hang loosely with your sarong ends.
