Oakley Incorporated is a manufacturer of sunglasses and other sporting equipment founded by James Jannard in 1975. The company is headquartered in Foothill Ranch, California. The company has been awarded over 600 patents since its founding, many for its breakthrough concepts in eye wear manufacturing design and materials.
Founding
James Jannard began Oakley by producing hydrophilic rubber motorcycle hand grips in his garage. Jannard's design quickly became popular among professional riders because their clutching ability increased with moisture, unlike the traditional grips of the era, which became slippery after perspiration or exposure to wet conditions. Jannard dubbed his rubber Unobtanium. The material is still widely used in Oakley eye wear to this day.
The "O-Frame" (1980)
Oakley's immersion into athletic eye wear began in 1980, when the company released its first model of motorcycle goggles. Dubbed the "O-Frame," the goggle consisted of an arced cylindrical lens that would eventually become the brand's hallmark.
The "O-Frame" (1983)
By the early 1980s, the "O-Frame" had spurned the creation of the Oakley "Eyeshades" design that, according to the company's official website, would transform sunglasses "from generic accessory to vital equipment."
LeMond Sponsorship (1984)
The first professional athlete to be sponsored by Oakley was the American cyclist Greg LeMond, three-time winner of the Tour de France. LeMond began wearing Oakley sunglasses during competition in 1984. Oakley has sponsored a wide variety of athletes since, most notably the American cyclist Lance Armstrong, who has a lifetime deal with the brand.

In the 30-plus years since its founding, the Oakley brand has grown to include athletic clothing and footwear, luggage, timepieces and protective padding equipment.
