Things You Can Do With a Sarong

Sarongs are usually large but very thin squares or rectangles of fabric. They are available in every color and pattern imaginable and are often available inexpensively at markets worldwide. With airlines limiting luggage allowances, packing sarongs is an incredible space saver. Sarongs can function as many of the necessities when packing for a tropical vacation or even just a day at the beach nearby.

Make a Dress

Make a dress, skirt or beach cover up using a sarong. You can fold and tie the sarong in any number of ways in order to create different looks. Make a strapless dress by wrapping the sarong around you twice and tying the top two ends together, or wrap the top two corners around your neck for a halter dress. Fold the sarong in half lengthwise and wrap it around you for a cute skirt or make a long skirt when traveling to cover your legs when entering holy sites.

Keep Warm

Use a sarong as a shawl to keep your shoulders warm on a cool evening or in a too-air conditioned room. Tie one around your neck as a scarf or around your head and neck if you don't have a hat on a cold night. Use it as an extra blanket at night to keep you warm while you sleep.

Substitute for Linens

Sarongs can seriously save room in your luggage by acting as sheets, towels, beach blankets and picnic blankets. Some hotels and hostels have beds that you can't be sure are clean. Use two sarongs as your sheets for protection from questionable bedding. When you wake up, use your sarong to cover yourself on the way to a shared bathroom situation and as a towel to dry yourself off. Sarong material is usually very thin and dries quickly, making it a perfect candidate for a bath or beach towel substitute.

Carry Things

Tie the corners of your sarong together to make a bag to carry your things to the beach or a picnic. Use it as bag for keeping dirty laundry separated from clean clothes. Sarongs are also used in many countries to make baby carriers. Look up instructions to wrap and tie a sarong into a baby carrier and use it at home or while traveling rather than packing unnecessary bulky items.

Provide Privacy

Sarongs are usually rather large rectangles, perfect for using in situations when you'd prefer a little modesty. Secure it over windows as a window shade or drape it between two trees as a sun-shade. If you need to use nature's restroom while in the company of others, like on a hike, have someone else hold the sarong up as a make-shift wall for a little privacy. Similarly, create an on-the-go changing room for the beach or pool by having someone else hold the sarong around you while you change into your swimsuit.
