Types of Parasols and Umbrellas

Parasols and umbrellas are used for various reasons and are thus made into various types to serve their ultimate purpose. The main purpose of a parasol or umbrella varies, but generally it is designed to either keep us dry during rainy weather or to keep the sun off our skin during a bright and sunny day.

Asian Style Parasol

The Asian style parasol is the type commonly found in China, Thailand, Japan and similar regions. The traditional parasol was made from fabrics like linen or silk and bamboo, though it is also available in paper as well. This type of parasol is designed for protection from the sun rather than protection from the rain. The parasol is lightweight and delicate due to the materials as well as practical and beautiful. Unlike the Western style umbrellas and parasols, it does not curve downward at the outer edges.

Decorative Parasols

Decorative parasols were at one time common for Western countries and were carried by ladies. The shape is similar to a rain umbrella with a down-turned outer region to form a domed shape at the top, but is made of delicate materials like lace and fabric. The parasols are designed for sun protection, but were also designed for a delicate fashion statement as well. In general, the decorative parasols are no longer used for the original purpose of protection from the sun, though currently they are used for props in entertainment.

Beach Umbrella

A beach umbrella is a large umbrella option. It has a down-turned tip and is usually large enough to provide shade for two or three people. The bottom of the umbrella is designed to push into the sand to keep it in place while the umbrella gives shade to anyone who is ready to get out of the sun.

Golf Umbrella

The golf umbrella is a large and waterproofed umbrella used to prevent getting wet during rainy weather. Golf umbrellas can easily fit several people or one person with equipment underneath them, depending on the situation, and are often around 60 inches or more in diameter. They are arced downward for a domed shape that allows the water to flow off the rim and prevents you from getting wet.

Folding Umbrella

Folding umbrellas are the basic small and personal umbrellas designed to keep you dry while also folding up into a small shape that allows portability. These fold into a small size, usually around six inches long and one to two inches in diameter, so you can take them anywhere when the weather seems uncertain. They are convenient, but are also small; usually they are too small for more than one person to fit under the umbrella at the same time.
