Red jasper is a hard gem with a smooth outer surface. The stone may take on different shades and hues of red, burgundy, brown, black, gray, orange or yellow. The elegance and reverence of this stone dates back to biblical times and it is often set into jewelry pieces today. Repairing severely damaged red jaspers -- broken or smashed -- is nearly impossible. Repairing a surface scratch or a stone caked with mildew, on the other hand, is possible in a few simple steps.
Instructions
- 1
Gently pry loose the tongs of the piece of jewelry holding the stone. Gently push them up to loosen their grip on the stone. Use tweezers to help. Pry up one tong and then pry up the tong directly across from the one you just worked on. Always work on the tongs in pairs to ensure the stone stays in place until you are finished. Remove the stone.
2Spray one squirt of glass cleaner onto a soft cloth or gently wet the soft cloth with warm water and mild soap. Rub the stone gently around the entire surface area. Press firmly if mildew and surface scratches are visible to the naked eye to remove these markings. Never spray cleaner directly onto the stone as doing so may cause discoloration.
3Place a small piece of clear tape onto the stone and adhere it to the end of the tweezers. Carefully set the stone back in place into the jewelry. The tape keeps the stone from falling if you lose your grip while making sure your setting is even. Remove the tape.
4Gently push the tongs back down in the same manner as you pulled them up. Be patient when moving the tongs up or down to ensure you do not inadvertently scratch the stone with the tweezers.
