Headbands are hair accessories that are always in fashion. Not only do headbands sweep away hair from your face, they are also an opportunity to make a fashion statement. Be original and design your own headband so that it reflects your style and taste. Using ribbon to weave a headband is an easy and affordable way to creatively express yourself.
Materials and Preparation
To begin, you will need a basic plastic headband at least of an inch wide. You will also need a hot glue gun as well as a lighter and alligator clips for sealing the ends. For the ribbons, use four 3/8 inch pieces of material cut in to about 30 or 40 inch lengths. There are many possible color combinations for creating your headband. You can use funky, stand out colors or match them to your outfits. Before you begin the weaving you will need to prepare the ribbon by sealing the loose ends with a lighter. Take the four ribbon pieces and pair them up by overlapping the sealed ends at about inch. Use the hot glue gun to attach the overlapped ends. You should now have taken your four pieces and created two separate, multi colored ribbons. Cross these two pieces over each other to make an X shape. Now glue the seam of one of the ribbons to the inside of the end of the headband and the other ribbon to the outside end of the headband. The ribbons should be glued at the place they cross. To position your starting point, fold the top left ribbon over the seam on the front and the right side ribbon over the piece on the back of the band. You can add a spot of glue at the starting point to prevent shifting as you weave.
Weaving
To begin weaving you will need to hold the headband so that it is upside down and the top part of the head band is facing toward you. To start a simple four step weave pattern take the ribbon on the right front side and wrap it behind the headband so that it is now between the back right ribbon and headband. You should now have two back pieces, one front piece on the left and one back piece on the right side. You should take the right back ribbon across the front and this should place all four ribbons on the left side. You can now take the upper back ribbon and pull it around the front, under the upper front ribbon and over the lower front ribbon. To finish the first part of this four step pattern, pull the left side upper front piece and wrap it under the back ribbon. Continue this pattern until you reach the end of the band. When you reach the end, place the alligator over the ribbons to secure them while you glue each end down to the headband. Cut off any excess fabric and use a lighter to heat seal the edges.
