How to Print Names on Towels

Dying fabrics and painting on them present different challenges. Personalizing towels for your home or as a gift for a new baby or friend can actually be done in a few ways. Outside of traditional hand sewing of monograms you may choose to paint names onto towels using fabric paint, stencils, or ink iron-on transfers. There are a wide variety of fabric paints available and you can mix and match them to customize and paint names on towels for yourself.

Instructions

Wash and dry the towels. Cover your work table with newspaper and a drop/paint cloth. Decide where you want to print the name on the towel.

Choose the stamp you want to begin with. Place the dry stamp for the first letter into position and align the following letters. Check that the stamps are properly spaced.

Mark the position of the top and bottom of the stamps on the towel using your pencil and remove the stamps. Ink the stamps in the fabric paint or ink you have chosen. Painting on or dipping the stamp in fabric color paint could allow you a wider range in color choices when working with ink stamps in this project.

Apply the stamps in the chosen order one at a time and then remove them on a test sheet of paper to see the result. Using the stamp be sure to press down on the stamp pad firmly so that you will have enough ink transferred to the stamp.

Wipe the stamp on a spare towel after you practice and reapply fresh ink and apply the stamp to the towel. If you are hand painting practice sketching the design you want to use onto tracing paper and transfer that to a stiff cardboard or construction paper to make a stencil or simply freehand draw your design onto the towel.

You can also choose to use iron on letters to print the names on your towel. To do this preheat your iron. Cover your work space with a thin sheet and place towel flat on top.

Line up the iron-on paper with the design facing down onto the towel and smooth it out. Lay another thin white sheet over top of the iron-on and press the iron onto the transfer applying the pressure for about 20 seconds and then rub in a circular motion from outside inward over the iron-on for 10-15 seconds.

Remove the top white sheet and let the transfer cool. Lift the corner of the iron-on transfer paper back and peel it away gently.
